Cyber Hygiene Made Simple
First of all, what do we mean by "cyber hygiene?"
Cyber attacks are as much a part of daily life as allergies, viruses, and bacteria. Personal hygiene involves activities you perform to care for yourself, such as washing your hands, bathing, and brushing your teeth. Maintaining your body with basic "personal hygiene" can help prevent disease and promote overall health.
In a similar vein, cyber hygiene refers to a collection of practices and simple security measures that individuals or companies can adopt to safeguard their valuable information, including digital assets, systems, and data, from cyber threats.
Small and medium organizations often become easier targets for malicious actors due to inadequate budgets or technical expertise in establishing basic cyber hygiene. These practices could include:
Use strong, unique passwords and change them regularly.
Enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible.
Regularly update and patch software and operating systems.
Back up important data and verify the integrity of backups.
Limit user access to only what is necessary for their roles (principle of least privilege).
Train employees to recognize phishing and social engineering attacks.
Install and maintain antivirus and firewall protections.
Monitoring systems for unusual activity and responding promptly to incidents.
Control and monitor physical access to your business's spaces.
Keep sensitive areas and materials locked.
For organizations aiming to achieve CMMC Level 1 compliance, cyber hygiene specifically involves implementing 17 basic cybersecurity practices, such as controlling access to information systems, identifying and authenticating users, and maintaining regular backups, as outlined in federal regulations like FAR 52.204-211. Yet, any organization needs to practice cyber hygiene to prevent attacks and remain resilient when they occur (and they will happen).
Cyber hygiene is the routine, proactive maintenance of digital security practices that reduce risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and build resilience against common cyber threats. It is the essential foundation upon which more advanced cybersecurity measures are built.
